The Jamie Kelly Collection, 1854-1978 1950-1960.

The Jamie Kelly Collection is expansive. It includes documents from the mid nineteenth century, reproductions of documents from the early seventeeth century, and research notes and artifacts from the mid twentieth century. The documents vary, ranging from film reels documenting the excavation of The Tiger, which marked the begining of Kelly's career in history, to actual remnants of the Wyckoff House, the oldest house in New York, which Kelly helped to preserve. Included as well are research notes, photographs, correspondences, and newspaper clippings, all documenting Kelly's progress as Brooklyn Borough Historian. The types of projects Kelly took on were varied; though they all relate to the history of Brooklyn. Some documents were very local and appear to be pertinent to only a very contained type of research, such as the records of forgeries in Series III, and the scrapbook made from a ledger in Series VIII. Some are more universal, such as the dedication of the Verrazzano Bridge in Series VI and the establishment of Jennie Jerome's birthplace in Brooklyn in Series IV. The many scrapbooks featured in this series are beautifully put together and well organized. Although there is no indication in any of them if they were created for preservation, to be presented in some way, or for any other reason, they each are historically rich with text, photographs, and illustrations that highlight this unique collection.
